Gino Del Guercio
BOSTON SCIENCE COMMUNICATIONS, INC
What is your line of work? I'm a documentary filmmaker specializing in science, medicine and technology. I produce long-format documentaries for PBS, Discovery Channel and A&E, as well as corporate for a few select clients.
What do you like best about it? Documentary filmmaking is an exciting and challenging blend of journalism and Hollywood. It requires both the left and right side of your brain. On the one hand films have to be exciting and enjoyable to watch, on the other hand they have to be accurate and meet strict budget and time constraints. It's also very much of a group effort with dozens of creative people. And when it works well the final product is always far more than the sum of its parts.
What are your key creative inspirations? We're surrounded by extremely sophisticated visual communications. I get ideas everywhere: billboards, television, the movies and the World Wide Web. Try watching television, especially commercials, with the sound off.
What is your best story of how an idea came about? I find that the best thing to do when I'm really blocked is go for a long walk on the beach.
How has Spark! fit in?
I've worked with Ronni Komarow for at least a decade. I always call
her whenever I need graphic design work. She's also very good with both
the left and right sides of her brain. Creative and yet cost/schedule conscious.
